What is MCP?
Model Context Protocol—standard wiring between AI clients and tools, data, and prompts.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open pattern for connecting AI applications to tools, data sources, and prompt templates through MCP servers—so integrations are reusable instead of one-off plugins.
Why teams adopt it
- Separation — data access lives in servers with their own auth and logging
- Composability — swap databases, issue trackers, or internal APIs without rewriting the client
- Auditability — narrow surface per server vs giving the model full shell access
Read current specs and SDK docs on the official Model Context Protocol site before you productionize a server.
PunkSolid usage
We use MCP where it reduces bespoke glue (issue trackers, deployment hooks, internal read-only APIs). We do not expose production databases write-capable to models by default.
